scott derrickson, director of marvel's <em>doctor strange</em>, to speak at lipscomb on dec. 2

世界杯2022预选赛录像回放 ’s college of entertainment & the arts presents scott derrickson, director of the smash hit marvel film doctor strange, as part of its artist-in-residence speaker series on friday, dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in lipscomb’s collins alumni auditorium.

scottderrickson_largethe conversation will be hosted by steve taylor, lipscomb’s filmmaker-in-residence as well as a writer, producer and recording artist. the air speaker series is a fun, lighthearted and enlightening conversation with some of today’s most successful artists. during the event, taylor will discuss artistry, faith and entrepreneurship with derrickson to tease out the challenges and opportunities an evolving industry has brought as he has used the horror genre to explore the supernatural and examine the struggle between good and evil.

a writer and director, derrickson is most known for marvel’s doctor strange in 2016, sinister in 2012 and the exorcism of emily rose in 2005. growing up in colorado, he graduated from biola university with a b.a. in humanities, with an emphasis on literature and philosophy, a b.a. in communications, with an emphasis on film, and a minor in theological studies. he also earned a m.a. in film production from the university of southern california school of cinematic arts.

“scott derrickson is a longtime friend and one of the most creatively subversive minds in hollywood,” said taylor. “he brings intelligence and soul to the stories he tells, and they’re all informed by his deep respect for cinema’s past masters. with doctor strange, scott’s achieved a new level of worldwide critical and commercial success. we’re thrilled to have him at lipscomb.”

since its opening on nov. 4, doctor strange, produced by marvel studios and distributed by walt disney studios motion pictures, has dominated box office sales worldwide, reaching over $500 million.

within the movie, dr. stephen strange, played by actor benedict cumberbatch, is faced with massive life changes when a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. when traditional medicine fails, he seeks healing and hope in a mysterious enclave and quickly learns the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. strange must choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

beginning last february with special guest, wayne kirkpatrick, co-creator of the broadway musical hit something rotten!, the air speaker series fosters honest, and sometimes delightfully awkward conversation as taylor seeks to help the audience understand the inner workings of the artists’ career, life and faith.
