hamblin awarded fellowship by american college of critical care medicine

susan hamblin, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, has been awarded a fellowship in the american college of critical care medicine, presented at the combined american college of critical care medicine convocation/society of critical care medicine awards presentation in february 2019.“your acceptance into the college was based on your commitment to the ideals and practice of multiprofessional critical care,” stated the fccm acceptance letter. “we applaud your achievements in fostering the ideals of critical care through your leadership, program development and participation in local, regional, and national critical care related organizations including the society of critical care medicine.”
according to the college, to be awarded the title of fellow, one must demonstrate excellence in collaborative multi-professional critical care practice, program development and scholarly activities related to critical care.
hamblin has a been an active member of the society of critical care medicine in clinical pharmacy since she was a critical care resident in 2008. she has been actively involved in the sccm clinical pharmacy and pharmacology section education, communications, and patient safety committees. additionally, she chaired the sccm membership committee and has led initiatives such as a congress buddy program, a service that matches experienced congress attendees with new attendees to maximize the congressional opportunities available to newer pharmacy clinicians.
prior to coming to lipscomb in august 2018, hamblin worked as the trauma clinical pharmacist at vanderbilt medical center for eight years. her clinical responsibilities included rounding with the multidisciplinary trauma team to care for critically ill and recovering trauma patients on a daily basis.
through her involvement on the multidisciplinary trauma conference, t=trauma process improvement committee and institutional critical care committee, she was able to work with many departments and providers to develop and implement an extensive number of protocols.
hamblin has demonstrated dedication to the education and training of pharmacists at all levels of training. she served as the critical care pharmacy residency program director for five years while at vanderbilt. she served as a preceptor for more than 30 pharmacy residents and more than 20 student pharmacists, contributing to the experience in education required to become a fellow of the american college of critical care medicine.
at lipscomb, hamblin teaches courses across three disciplines, including specialized critical care lectures, in the pharmacy, physician assistant, and nursing programs. she also has a practice site at vanderbilt where she works with traumatic brain injury patients.
hamblin’s research interests center around traumatic brain injury pharmacotherapy, intrapleural alteplase, dvt prophylaxis and analgesia. over the past three years, hamblin has had 15 research abstracts accepted to national meetings and has acquired 11 publications ranging from original research to editorials. she has also authored one book chapter and served as an expert reviewer on two book chapters. in the spring of 2019, she was invited to join the editorial board for the scientific journal, critical care medicine.
