making an impact: tammy deiter -- leadership and service in roles at second harvest food bank of middle tennessee and throughout civic organizations in hickman county

self-proclaimed lifelong learner, tammy deiter is a current student in the leadership and public service program. deiter is able to apply her learnings to personal and professional interests as there is a wide range of concepts taught in class. after earning a ba in anthropology/sociology and working with the tennessee department of health and department of children’s services as part of her ten years in social work, deiter is currently the senior manager of federal programs at second harvest food bank in middle tennessee. deiter found the lps program to be a “perfect fit.”

deiter shared, “i am lucky enough to have a career that mirrors my personal goal to be of service and to work to find issues in our communities alongside and giving voice to those who are most affected by these issues.”

the second harvest food bank in middle tennessee has served to feed the hungry and solve hunger issues in middle tennessee since 1978. deiter oversees the team working with federal nutrition programs the food bank participates in including senior feeding, summer and afterschool feeding for children, usda commodity supplemental food program (csfp) and supplemental nutrition assistance program (snap) outreach.

an engaged member of her community, deiter is part of the hickman county health council and the board chair of friends of buford p mccord memorial park. she lives with her partner, josh, and an irish terrier rescue dog, jam.

the master of arts (m.a.) in leadership & public service is designed to be a year-long program on a cohort system. “the cohort experience lets students take the journey together,” said deiter. “learning and building off each other’s skills and personalities enhance the learning experience in a way traditional lectures cannot.” she is on track to complete the program in august 2023 with her lps cohort walking at the december 2023 commencement ceremony.
