the borderline between beneficial and dishonest ai: a technical report https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/10 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/10 thu, 02 may 2024 13:32:25 pdt artificial intelligence (ai) has been used since 1950 but it was largely overlooked by the public until 2022. current discussions about ai center around academic integrity. this report seeks to understand if ai can be handled, used, or accepted in lipscomb’s academic environment as a beneficial aid to writing and research, without actively doing these tasks for an individual. generative ai is a neural network, which enables it to receive input, gather information from a database of existing content, and create new content [2]. due to the nature of generative ai, its beneficial contributions to academia are extremely limited.

using ai chatbots as ideation machines https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/9 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/9 thu, 02 may 2024 13:32:23 pdt the team analyzed 3 popular chatbots and found that none of them could consistently produce idea-centered essay help responses. the team approached them with 3 separate prompts, one from each of three academic subjects. the team analyzed how each chatbot adapted to the addition of personal information from the “student” and to the phrase, “what are some ideas that could help me get started?” the goal with each interaction was to receive a response in which the chatbot did not produce any pre-written content. overall, the team’s research did not suggest that ai is fully reliable as an ideation tool.

austen's realist feminine icon https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/8 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/8 mon, 29 apr 2024 09:20:06 pdt sean mcconnell strategies of liberation and empowerment in maya angelou's and audre lorde's black feminist literature https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/7 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/7 mon, 10 jul 2023 06:15:07 pdt the progression of second-wave feminism in america saw black feminist writers such as maya angelou and audre lorde utilizing literature, and notably poetry, to resist against their oppression, due not only to their gender but also to their race. lorde states in her 1977 essay, “poetry is not a luxury,” that poetry, for women, “is a vital necessity of our existence. it forms the quality of light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action.” one of the aims of lorde’s explicitly political poems—as well as angelou’s poetry and her autobiographical novel i know why the caged bird sings (1969)—was to empower and liberate black women, not just individually, but collectively. this liberation is accomplished in part through the deconstruction of stereotypical views of black womanhood, as seen in caged bird, and in part through the linguistic strategies of empowerment employed in the poetry of both angelou and lorde. this essay analyzes these strategies in lorde’s “a litany for survival” and angelou’s “still i rise,” as they include the use of both collective and subjective speakers, calls to action, and declarative statements. by repurposing the “artistic” form of poetry and the “personal” form of autobiography, lorde’s and angelou’s writings became an example of women empowering their own voices by reworking and reshaping the structures of traditional, constrictive literary genres to fit their black feminist identities.

the linguistic reimagining of natural elements in gerard manley hopkins' nature sonnets. https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/6 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/6 fri, 23 jun 2023 07:40:08 pdt gerard manley hopkins (1844-1889) was a victorian poet and jesuit priest now numbered among the major english poets. when the first edition of his poems was published posthumously in 1918 by his friend robert bridges, it “baffled more readers than it converted” (martin 50). nevertheless, despite this original reticence to accept hopkins as a poet, the tests of time and scholarship has proven his depth and continued relevance of study.

the importance of reading in jane austen's novels https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/5 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/5 fri, 23 jun 2023 06:20:48 pdt reading is a central theme of both emma (1815) and pride and prejudice (1813), two of jane austen’s most celebrated novels. the characters are constantly reading books, comparing the sizes of their libraries, and endeavoring to respond to tricky situations based on their readings of them. mr. darcy claims that a lady’s education is not complete until she adds to all the usual accomplishments something “more substantial”: the “improvement of her mind by extensive reading” (27). though reading is regarded as a source of knowledge and even wisdom, these novels are what bonaparte calls “a map of misreading” (142). elizabeth bennet and emma woodhouse are similar not only in their charming personalities, but more so in their propensity to misread texts, situations, and themselves. but rather than ending in disaster, these errors in judgement push the plot forward and create learning opportunities for the characters.

raising the iron curtain: healing collective oppression through literature https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/4 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/4 fri, 12 may 2023 08:40:08 pdt one day in the life of ivan denisovich, by former gulag prisoner alexander solzhenitsyn, is a short novel that entails an ordinary day for a prisoner, shukhov, in a siberian gulag. although the work is a typical skaz, a traditional russian narrative form, the novel was well-received by russians at the time of publishing in 1962. this paper will explore the reason for such acclamation, understanding how solzhenitsyn’s innovations to the skaz allowed readers to connect with their past. the paper also mentions theories such as traumatic realism to comprehend how such a bleak novel positively impacted post-stalinist readers. questions this paper will consider are, “how did solzhenitsyn’s novel affect trauma-ridden survivors of stalinism and their memories of past events?,” “why is shukhov a good (or bad) symbol of human existence to soviet people?,” and “how does solzhenitsyn’s writing style contribute to the unmasking of the horrors in camp life?” this paper will also explore the undertones of christian spirituality throughout the novel by asking questions like, “how do characters like alyosha the baptist find fulfillment through christian asceticism and the desire to survive?,” and “how does this work’s spiritual undertones correlate with the collective suffering of poststalinist readers?” although one day provided soviet readers a means of healing, one novel could not bear the trauma of one of the most horrific holocausts. the paper acknowledges that russia (and former soviet countries) still lack proper holocaust memorialization today, while applauding solzhenitsyn for taking the first step in acknowledging the horrors of the stalinist regime.

how political aspirations conceived a dramatic linguistic shift https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/3 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/3 wed, 10 may 2023 08:50:06 pdt the 1066 norman conquest presents a specific instance of how conflicting political ambitions stimulated a substantial historical and social shift. on the political front, king harold ii and william the conqueror possessed differing motives in their quest for the english crown. the political conflict witnessed contention between two groups that spoke entirely different languages: the anglo-saxons speaking old english and the normans speaking norman french. the norman victory in 1066 would have long-lasting implications for england and the english language. after the normans conquered, old english lost its prominence in england, initiating a linguistic transitional period. as a consequence of the norman dominance over the hierarchical power structure of britain, political power yielded dramatic linguistic changes in the english language.

war in heaven: the archdeacon's embodiment of charles williams' coinherence https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/2 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/2 wed, 10 may 2023 08:35:09 pdt charles williams published war in heaven in 1930, the first of his seven supernatural novels. in war in heaven, archdeacon julian davenant of castra parvulorum is the unlikely hero who embodies calm goodness. war in heaven’s dramatic arc focuses on a struggle to control the legendary holy grail, the chalice that the characters believe jesus used at the last supper, and brutal spiritual warfare. amid a turning and twisting plot, williams infuses the text with the theological concepts of coinherence, substitution, and exchange. in pivotal scenes, williams imbues the archdeacon’s words and actions with his theological framework. in making the unworldly and unlikely archdeacon its hero, war in heaven articulates the complexities of williams’ theology and gives his audience a clear example of how one can live out coinherence.

neil gaiman's elevated fairy tale: childhood trauma through the lens of postmodernism https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/1 https://digitalcollections.lipscomb.edu/eml_student/1 wed, 10 may 2023 08:25:06 pdt in the ocean at the end of the lane, neil gaiman explores the influence of trauma on identity formation. in the sinister world of his liminal fantasy, gaiman’s nameless narrator strives to assemble a comforting sense of identity in the midst of traumatic chaos. viewed through a postmodern lens, gaiman’s use of hypertextuality and non-linear storytelling undermines idealized views of objective truth and reality, ultimately suggesting that nothing in life can be reduced to a binary.
