audition guidelines - school of music
all degrees
the school of music audition is a two part process, including pre-screening materials and a live audition. all students must complete a performance audition and interview for admission to the school of music.
pre-screening video
prior to being invited to audition, all students must submit a pre-screening video through their mybison portal. please upload all videos to youtube - you may make them private or public - and then provide the links in your audition form. the repertoire and requirements for the prescreening portion of the audition process are listed by instrument or degree area (found below).
after review by the school of music faculty, selected applicants who pass pre-screening will be notified about next steps for auditions, including scheduling of a live audition.
live audition
students who are selected for a live audition will have the opportunity to perform for the faculty on campus - students who are unable to attend an in person audition will be invited to a live audition with faculty via zoom. the time and date for the audition will be sent directly to the student from admissions and the school of music. the repertoire and requirements for the live audition portion of the audition process are listed by instrument or degree area (found below).
all auditions will last approximately 15 minutes and include a short interview conducted by members of the school of music faculty.
students who would like an accompanist during their live audition must submit a request after confirming their audition date.
bachelor of arts in music industry studies
auditions are required for ensemble placement for students interested in pursuing the b.a. in music industry studies; students must also complete a pre-screening essay and an interview with the director of music industry studies. the repertoire and requirements are listed under the degree area (found below).
minors and ensemble scholarships
only one video will be required for students interested in minoring in music or students interested in music scholarships by participating in ensembles. please follow the criteria as outlined in the guidelines section below.

pre-screening requirements: applicants should prepare two pieces by memory from contrasting periods: baroque, classical, romantic, impressionistic or contemporary. for students applying in commercial performances one standard jazz tune and a contemporary pop song or a traditional piano work.
live audition requirements: applicants should prepare two pieces by memory from contrasting periods: baroque, classical, romantic, impressionistic or contemporary. only one of the pieces from the pre-screening can be repeated for the live audition. scales and sight-reading may be requested.

- a demonstration of two styles of your choice. these must be played with a track.

pre-screening requirements: submit two contrasting songs that highlight your musical and vocal abilities. the audition pieces should be accompanied by an instrument (piano or guitar) or an instrumental track. see specifics below for each vocal concentration.
- commercial music: two contrasting songs from any commercial music genre (pop, country, folk, gospel, funk/jazz, r&b, etc.).
- classical music: two contrasting solo songs from memory. selections from the classical vocal solo tradition are preferred (i.e. italian, latin, french, german, or english art song; african american spiritual or american folksong; or an aria). selections from standard musical theater repertoire are also acceptable. at least one selection must be in a foreign language.
- hybrid concentration: prepare one commercial music song and one classical music song, adhering to the guidelines above.
- vocal music education: students may select from both genres, but at least one selection should come from the classical vocal solo tradition, preferably in a foreign language.

pre-screening requirements: please submit two examples of your work - specifics below.
- a video of yourself playing a song of your choice, either an original or a cover song on your primary instrument (if you play more than one instrument, feel free to include video footage of you playing other instruments);
- a mp3 or wav file demonstrating your production work. this should demonstrate your use of daw technology such as garageband, logic, pro tools, etc. for both video and audio submissions, please upload to youtube (you may make them private or public, and then provide a link in your audition form), and—in the video description, please also include a brief explanation of what you did in this production (e.g. i played bass, recorded the instruments, mixed the track, etc.)

trumpets, trombones, and saxophones will submit an unlisted youtube video link of the required materials to syeh [at] lipscomb.edu and bablasko [at] lipscomb.edu by august 16th, 2024 11pm.
