chemists work in a variety of sectors including medical, industrial, governmental, educational, environmental and nonprofit. this degree opens doors to a plethora of opportunities, offering training in fundamental chemistry areas such as organic, inorganic, physical, biological and analytical chemistry. embark on an educational journey that goes beyond the basics, providing you with the chance to delve into advanced topics like green chemistry, polymers and nanomaterials, driving groundbreaking innovations.

while anyone can choose the chemistry degree, it is primarily designed for people interested in pursuing graduate school in chemistry with the goal of becoming a chemist or professor.

approved by the committee on professional training of the american chemical society (cpt-acs).

students who complete the professional chemistry degree and biochemistry (cm 3313) are eligible for certification as a chemist by the committee on professional training of the american chemical society, the largest scientific society in the world and the recognized international authority on the education of chemists.

capstone projects

the following applies to both chemistry and applied chemistry majors:

cm 2910 - chemistry colloquium

a community-focused, discussion-based treatment of the latest discoveries and issues in the field; graduate and professional options for the future; research opportunities; and approaching science as service.

cm 4922 - chemistry capstone

a review of the major topics in the undergraduate chemistry curriculum, as well as discussion of science ethics, the intersection of faith and science, and current developments and issues in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. discussion will be based on readings and seminars.

applied chemistry

interested in tailoring a chemistry degree to include training in another area or field? the applied chemistry major is intended to offer you a robust education in chemistry providing the flexibility to couple your chemistry education with another area such as forensics, business, computer science, mathematics, writing and more.

the department of chemistry and biochemistry is open to tailoring the applied chemistry degree plan to your needs and interests.

education levels offered: secondary (6-12)

you'll gain an excellent background in chemistry as well as the educational knowledge you need to prepare for your own students. chemistry teachers are in demand, and our students are regularly recruited. they move on to the classroom and often become educational administrators — principals, assistant principals and heads of school. student teaching is required for chemistry teaching majors.

chemical engineers

chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and math to solve problems that involve the production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food, and many other products. they design processes and equipment for large-scale manufacturing, plan and test production methods and byproducts treatment, and direct facility operations.

pharmacists

pharmacists dispense prescription medications to patients and offer expertise in the safe use of prescriptions. they also may conduct health and wellness screenings, provide immunizations, oversee the medications given to patients, and provide advice on healthy lifestyles.
