academic advising experience at lipscomb
we are committed to the idea that academic advising is a viable and integral component of the educational process. to that end, lipscomb has adopted a centralized advising model, where all fall 2024 freshman will be assigned an academic success coach, who will not only advise them, but be there touch point for their time at lipscomb. students will also be assigned a faculty mentor that is a professional in their area of study. their faculty mentor will be their touch point for internships, career opportunities and so much more!

aims for advising to be more than simply providing factual information and constructing semester schedules. it is our desire you develop a mentoring relationship with your academic success coach and faculty mentor. we hope you will see these professionals as someone to whom you can turn with questions not only about what classes but about your vocation, calling and life direction. the university truly wishes to embrace who you are and mold you into what you can be.
academic advising process - incoming freshmen
once you are admitted to lipscomb–we match you with your academic success coach and start the process of planning and designing your courses to lead you towards degree completion. we encourage you to follow your degree audit (conclusive) which is on your student portal, a snapshot guide of classes you have completed and future ones to be taken. you will meet each semester with your academic success coach for continued support and guidance with your degree plan.
lipscomb requires a minimum of 126 hours to graduate and some majors will require more. make sure you work every semester with your academic success coach to plan how you will meet your general education and major requirements. if you want to study abroad for a semester, let your academic success coach know as soon as possible to incorporate it into your degree plan. remember—you are the owner of your academic journey and goals! we are excited to support you along the way!
we are excited you are joining us at lipscomb! after completing your bison portal checklist items, your academic success coach will place you in classes that are tailored to you and your academic goals. for us to accurately provide that for you, you need to complete a few steps:
- fill out your pre-registration questionnaire, located on your bison portal (due by may 1 for fall semester, november 1 for spring semester)
- entering students are placed in en 1113 (introduction to university writing). in order to place out of en 1113 and instead begin with en 1313 (university writing), see the options below.
in order to place directly in to en 1313, students can:- submit an ap literature and composition or ap language and composition of 3, 4 or 5.
- submit an act score of 22 or higher (sat of 560).
- submit a clep score of 55 or higher.
- submit transfer or dual enrollment credit for an equivalent of en 1113.
- come in person for a writing placement workshop during nso, or on may 10 (11am), may 15 (2pm) or may 24 (11am). students are required to sign up for these workshops. students should check in at the admissions desk for these options.
- in order to meet the writing requirements of the general education program (and satisfy en 1113 and en 1313), students can submit transfer or dual enrollment credit for an equivalent of en 1313.
- take the math placement exam if you have not submitted an act/sat score or taken a college level math course.
- take the language placement exam if interested in pursuing classes in a foreign language at lipscomb.
- make sure your lipscomb email and my lipscomb accounts are set up.
- fill out your financial responsibility form
a full-time course load is 12-18 credit hours at lipscomb, with the average being 15-16. most classes will earn 3 credit hours, but can range from 1-4. as a new freshman you are required to take lipscomb experience and the story of israel your first semester. additional classes will be assigned based on your major choice and other general education requirements. below are links to various sources to help better understand your degree plan:

students will meet with their academic success coach during new student orientation to discuss their schedule. during your first semester on campus, you will meet your academic success coach who will help you choose classes every semester moving forward and keep you on track to your graduation.
we are excited you will be coming to lipscomb next semester! every school does advising and registration differently. at lipscomb, you are assigned a faculty academic advisor that will help you with your course selection and major degree plan. to set an appointment with that advisor, you need to complete the following steps in your admission process:
- send lipscomb all your previous transcripts
- set up your lipscomb email and my lipscomb account
- fill out your financial responsibility form
- talk to your admissions counselor about writing requirements and/or take the math placement exam if you have not transferred in those requirements
